Loch Watten has a small crannog at the Watten end of the loch. A crannog is an ancient habitation, at the side of a loch, or built in the loch on wooden logs or an artificial island. This crannog location was lived on between 2,500 to 4,000 years ago. The site of the Loch Watten crannog is mostly now underwater and the end of the loch was damned to raise water level in the relatively recent past. A small artificial island can still be seen and approached by boat.

Loch Watten is surrounded mostly by farms and agricultural land

The location of the ancient crannog on Loch Watten is surrounded by fairly shallow water and this would have been far lower when it was a habitation.
