Formally Barrogill Castle, the Castle of Mey was purchased by the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1952 and renovated. It was used by many years by the Queen Mother as a holiday home, one she greatly loved. It is now held in trust for Prince Charles who still visits once a year. The castle is said to be haunted by a "Green Lady", supposed to be the daughter of the 5th Earl of Caithness, who fell from the tower room looking for her lover. She may have died of a broken heart.
