Cottage near Dunnet Head - Mary-Ann's Cottage

Straw thatched roof traditional farm building used for keeping the pig.

The traditional thatched roof croft building used for keeping the pig outdoors. (Larger Image for Wallpaper or Printing). The upright Caithness stone slabs would have been used to keep the pig within the small outdoor space as well as providing shelter from the fairly constant winds that are a "feature" of the north of Scotland, and easpecially Caithness. What is not shown in this picture is that the cottage and croft is only a few hundred metres from the sea and would have been exposed to winter gales. So this is a fairly cosy farm building for the pigs, other animals were kept inside the other sheds that are attached to the cottage.
